Patient and Family Information
The Wishbone Project relies on your generosity and the generosity of others. The program provides you with an opportunity to make an incredibly important difference in the lives of the children we serve. The surgeries we perform repair facial birth defects and much, much more. It gives the child a chance to feel and be ‘normal’. There is a visible transformation from within – a spirit that becomes hopeful and is no longer burdened by self consciousness.

How to make an appointment and schedule the surgery
This should be done between 2 and 4 weeks before you are available to travel to Georgetown.
Call 592-225-0855 - ask for the operating theatre supervisor and she will make arrangements for a surgical date.
Transportation
You will have to pay for your transportation expenses to and from your home to Georgetown. The money for the Wishbone Project is dedicated to pay for the surgeries. Please plan ahead and have enough money on hand to pay for incidental expenses.
The day of the appointment
In all probability this will be the same day of the surgery surgery. Arrive early in the morning about 8 o'clock and go to the outpatient department.
You will go to see one of the doctors. They can be found in the outpatient centre at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. Ask the guard at the gate or any hospital staff where the outpatient center is located.
The night before surgery
DO NOT eat or drink anything after midnight. We try to schedule the youngest patients first thing in the morning.
The day of surgery
The patient will be admitted to a hospital bed where he/she will wait with the family member until the staff from the surgery theatre comes to collect the patient. The surgeon will do the surgery and the family member will wait in the waiting room. After the patient wakes up from the surgery the patient will be transferred back to the hospital room where he/she will stay. A family member may stay with very young patients, but please ask the nursing staff first.
Discharge from the hospital
The patient will be kept in the hospital for three to five days depending on the type of surgery. The surgeon will check on the patient regularly. Once the patient is released from the hospital you will be asked to stay in Georgetown for several more days until it is time to remove the stitches.
Questions
If you have any questions to ask the doctors or nurses please make a note of them so you won’t forget what to ask. Having your questions answered puts your mind at ease, you will better know what to expect and this will help the patient to recover faster.
If you have any questions about the Wishbone Project (directions, changing appointments, etc) or need to change your appointment please contact St. Joseph Mercy Hospital 592-227-2072(5).
