or the second time this year we have been blessed with the RAM Program (Remote
Area Medical). If you remember the Medical Team came in June and we did a
number of hysterectomies, LEEP procedures and pap smears predominantly on
women from Region 9 in the Interior. This time we performed 9 hysterectomies,
several LEEP procedures and about 50 pap smears. The pap smears were done
mostly on our women living with HIV/AIDS (Stemming the Tide Program) where
the risk of cervical cancer is ten times greater than HIV negative women.
All the hysterectomies and LEEP’s were done as a follow up to the June visit
when the pap smears came back positive. No one can say how many of the women’s
lives were lengthened as a result of diagnosis and timely treatment but I
know for sure that the RAM Program is making a very positive impact on the
lives of our Amerindian Women. We are so proud to be part of it. Our new surgeon arrives on the 10th of November and we are excited with his coming. We also have a wonderful new Doctor of Internal Medicine who has already made valuable contributions to the health care of the people in Georgetown and surrounding area. Now if we can locate an Obstetrician/Gynecologist, Gastroenterologist, cardiologist and one or more Medical doctors or Family Practice who would like to make their home in this beautiful Tropical Country.

This seems to be the month of breakdowns with the generator, elevator, boiler and one stairwell. I seem to be getting educated in a whole new language more than I ever wanted to know about controllers and gears and switches and whatever. It is not like one can run out to the hardware store and buy the part needed. It is a wonderful opportunity to practice the virtue of patience. Several of our former volunteers have returned and it is like a grand reunion. Rev. John is back in the Nursing classroom teaching Ethics, Sociology and Psychology and acting as host. This is his 6th year coming for three months each fall. Monica and her coworker Sally from Montana are here to teach a two week Critical Care Course and Jane is updating and upgrading our first level Nurse Aids and Senior Nurse Aids in skills and procedures. What a great group they are. |

his month a Team will be coming from Canada to do vision testing and eye exams
for eye diseases. They have brought hundreds of glasses already measured and
will be fitting many people in the Essequibo area at Charity with new glasses.
Cataracts and pterygium are real problems in Guyana especially in the Interior
where people are in the bright sun much of the day. We are helping to coordinate
the program and providing supplies and communication. It makes me appreciate
how many generous people there are in this world. As we approach Thanksgiving I will be hosting our annual Thanksgiving Dinner for some of our American Volunteers with a few Guyanese and Canadians thrown in. Actually it ends up being a multiethnic event and lots of fun. Happy Thanksgiving to all of you as we count our many blessings and tell God how grateful we are. Sr. Sheila
