I just don’t know where the days are going. Time surely flies
when one is having fun. We have many volunteers these days. A group of
students from Mercyhurst College, Erie PA just left last Tuesday. They had
been here for over 2 weeks. Presently we have students from Misericordia
University, Dallas PA. who are here for a month working in the various Mercy
Ministries. Four of them are rotating through the hospital in various
departments. This week we also have Lori, a Dietitian , and her husband
Victor who is an RN and manages an Assisted Living Facility. They are
working with our Dietary department, Patient and Family Services and our
student nurses. They are also helping out at Mercy Wings Vocational Center
in Catering and Household Management and the Early Education and Care of the
Elderly Division. Next week students from the University of Scranton will be
here for 2 weeks and we will have them doing gardening, painting and a
number of creative things. They certainly bring new life to the whole
hospital compound. Our patient relocation did not happen as planned for a good reason. There were too many patients and not enough beds. Suddenly we are seeing an increase in inpatients which means more income so we are not complaining. I think we are meant to keep all three units open. |
Yesterday we had the launching of a new daily newspaper in Guyana. I just think of Buffalo with one daily paper and Guyana now has four and the population of Metropolitan Buffalo is the same as the whole country of Guyana. I didn’t know we had so much newsworthy events going on. One would think from the news items, local TV and conversation that the US presidential election was being run in Guyana. There is great interest and speculation here. Of course there are a large number of Guyanese in the States so the interest is only natural. July first should be the start of the construction to finish off the School of Nursing repair. I sure hope it is ready for the incoming Freshmen. |
This coming week we will be doing surgery on Carissa, a 10
year old with many congenital anomalies. Our orthopedic surgeon will do
stage one of addressing her severely clubbed feet and the next phase will be
to flatten out her feet so hopefully she will learn to stand and eventually
walk. Two weeks ago we did kidney surgery on a 10 year old boy with three
kidneys, two of which were non functioning. In the mean time we are helping
to prepare and coordinate the transfer of two children from the Interior to
two hospitals in the United States. Roweena, a 7 year old, will go for heart
surgery and Amber, an 18 month old, will be going for spinal surgery. The
paper work is tremendous but worth all the trouble in the end.
Prices continue to rise on very staple items and unemployment or low paying jobs continue to rise with the prices. I hope there is a resolution to the many economic problems soon before the situation is beyond our control. It is heartbreaking to see what is happening to the Guyanese people due to poverty and disease. The government is working hard to address many of the issues but it is struggling to keep up as the issues are many. It is faith that keeps us going. Sr. Sheila Walsh, RSM,
